How Thick Should Vinyl Plank Flooring Be? Wear Layer Mils Explained

How thick should vinyl plank be? Buy a 20 mil wear layer for a Kirkland family home, 12 mil for bedrooms, 28 mil for dogs. Mils vs mm, from Wills Flooring.
Short answer

Judge vinyl plank by its wear layer, not its overall thickness: buy at least 20 mil for a Kirkland family home, 12 mil for low-traffic bedrooms, and 28 mil or more for big dogs, mudrooms and rentals. Total plank thickness of 5 to 6.5 mm is plenty; more than that buys comfort, not durability. A 5 mm SPC plank with a 20 mil wear layer will outlast an 8 mm plank with a 12 mil wear layer every time. Wills Flooring installs any thickness for $2.50 per sq ft in labor, 500 sq ft minimum.

Dogs, rentals, mudrooms28–30 mil

Vinyl plank specs are written to confuse. The box shows a big number in millimeters, the wear layer is buried in mils, and the two units are not even related. A common Reddit thread asks whether an 8 mm plank is "better" than a 5 mm plank, and the answer is usually no. We hear the same confusion from Kirkland buyers in Juanita, Rose Hill and Totem Lake who have been told thicker is always better. Here is what each number actually controls and where the money belongs.

Mils and millimeters are not the same thing

1 mil = 1/1000 in

Wear layer: measured in mils

The wear layer is the clear, tough film on top of the printed design. It is what your chair legs, dog claws and grit actually touch. Twenty mils is half a millimeter. It sounds thin because it is; that is why the difference between 6 mil and 20 mil is the difference between a floor that looks worn in three years and one that looks new in ten.

Usually 4 to 8 mm

Total thickness: measured in millimeters

This is the whole sandwich: wear layer, print film, rigid core and any attached pad. It controls how solid the plank feels, how well it bridges small subfloor dips and how it handles sound. It does almost nothing for scratch or wear resistance. A thick plank with a thin wear layer is a soft floor with a short life.

The coating on top of the wear layer

Better planks add a urethane or ceramic-bead finish over the wear layer. This is what resists micro-scratches and scuffing from grit tracked in off Lake Washington beaches and Bridle Trails horse paddocks. Two planks with the same 20 mil rating can perform quite differently depending on this coating, so ask about it.

Attached pad is not thickness that counts

A 1.5 mm foam or cork pad glued to the back inflates the total thickness number. It helps sound and comfort, which matters in Kirkland's Houghton and Juanita condos with neighbors below. It adds nothing to durability, so subtract it before you compare two planks by thickness.

Which wear layer goes where

Wear layerGradeWhere it belongsExpected look-new life
6–8 milBuilder / big-box entryClosets, guest rooms nobody uses. We do not recommend it anywhere else.3–5 years in traffic
12 milResidential lightBedrooms, home offices, adult households without pets7–10 years
20 milResidential heavy / light commercialKitchens, family rooms, halls, entries, homes with kids and a medium dog12–20 years
28–30 milCommercialBig dogs, mudrooms, rentals, home gyms, short-term rentals20+ years; often carries a commercial warranty
40 mil+Heavy commercialRetail and offices; overkill for most homes but fine if the price is closeEffectively the life of the floor

Warranty length tracks wear layer closely. A plank with a lifetime residential warranty at 12 mil is a marketing claim; read the exclusions for pets and furniture.

Total thickness: when it matters and when it does not

Go thicker (6.5–8 mm)

Worth paying for when

  • The subfloor has minor waves you would rather not fully level
  • You want a softer, warmer, quieter floor in bedrooms
  • The plank is a WPC and you want the foam core's comfort
  • You are floating over an old vinyl or tile surface with texture

Stay standard (4.5–6 mm)

Save the money when

  • The subfloor is flat plywood or a leveled slab
  • You are choosing SPC, which is stiff at any thickness
  • Door clearances and appliance heights are tight
  • You would rather put the difference into a 20 or 28 mil wear layer

Room by room in a Kirkland home

  1. Finn Hill family home · 1,150 sq ft main floorTwo kids, one 70 lb dog, open kitchen and living. 20 mil SPC at 5.5 mm with attached pad. One continuous run, no transitions.1,150 × $2.50 = $2,875 labor
  2. Totem Lake rental · 640 sq ft + 13 stairsTenants change every two years and nobody babies a rental. 28 mil commercial-grade plank, 5 mm, matte finish that hides scuffs.640 × $2.50 + 13 × $100 = $2,900 labor
  3. Houghton condo · 500 sq ft bedroomsAdults only, HOA sound rule. 12 mil WPC at 7 mm with a cork pad, chosen for quiet rather than toughness.500 × $2.50 = $1,250 labor, right at the minimum

A Kirkland resale note: Eastside buyers and their inspectors have learned to spot thin builder-grade vinyl by the scuffed traffic lanes. A 20 mil plank in a clean matte finish photographs and shows like a far more expensive floor, and it costs a modest premium over 12 mil on the material line. If you plan to sell within five years, this is the upgrade that pays back.

How to read a vinyl plank spec sheet in 60 seconds

  • Find the wear layer first. It should be stated in mils. If the box only shows a total millimeter thickness, assume the wear layer is thin and ask.
  • Check the coating. Look for ceramic bead, enhanced urethane or a named scratch-resistant finish. This is the difference between two 20 mil planks.
  • Identify the core. SPC is denser and dent-proof; WPC is softer and quieter. Neither changes the wear layer decision.
  • Read the warranty exclusions. Pet claws, rolling chairs and moisture from below are the usual carve-outs. A commercial warranty on a 28 mil plank is a good sign.
  • See it in your light. We bring 12, 20 and 28 mil samples to your Kirkland home so you can compare the finish under your windows. Details on our vinyl plank installation page.

Vinyl plank thickness questions from Kirkland buyers

From Juanita to Bridle Trails, and from the spec-sheet arguments on Reddit.

Is 12 mil wear layer good enough for a house?
For bedrooms and low-traffic rooms in a household without pets, yes. For kitchens, halls, entries and any home with children or a dog, 12 mil will show wear paths and dull spots within several years. We recommend 20 mil as the minimum for the main living areas of a Kirkland family home.
Is 20 mil or 22 mil wear layer necessary for dogs?
For a medium dog, 20 mil with a good urethane or ceramic-bead coating holds up well. For large dogs over about 70 lb, or two or more active dogs, step up to 28 or 30 mil commercial grade. Keep nails trimmed and use a matte, textured finish so the inevitable micro-scratches do not catch light.
Does thicker vinyl plank feel better?
Somewhat. A 7 or 8 mm plank, especially a WPC with an attached pad, feels warmer, softer and quieter than a 5 mm SPC. The difference is most noticeable in bedrooms and upstairs rooms. It does not make the floor last longer, so thickness is a comfort upgrade and the wear layer is the durability upgrade.
What is the difference between 5 mm and 8 mm vinyl plank?
Three millimeters of core and pad. The 8 mm plank hides small subfloor imperfections better, dampens sound and feels more substantial. The 5 mm plank is stiffer, fits under existing doors and appliances more easily and costs less. Scratch resistance is identical if the two share the same wear layer and coating.
Does the wear layer thickness change the installation price?
No. Wills Flooring installs vinyl plank for $2.50 per sq ft in labor regardless of wear layer or total thickness, with a 500 sq ft minimum and $100 per stair. The wear layer changes only the plank material cost, which we quote separately at the free in-home estimate after you pick a product.
Should I buy the thickest vinyl plank I can afford?
Put the money into the wear layer and coating first, then the core type, then total thickness. A 20 mil, 5.5 mm SPC is the best value for most Kirkland homes. If budget remains, upgrade to 28 mil for a busy household or add thickness for comfort in bedrooms, in that order.
