Two decisions, made clearly

Choose your wood construction.
Then choose the finish.

Solid and engineered describe how a board is made. Prefinished and site-finished describe when its protective finish is applied. Understanding that difference makes it easier to compare products and quotes.

Choose the construction

Solid hardwood

A single piece of real wood from top to bottom. Compare species, width and grade, then confirm suitability for the room and subfloor. Future sanding depends on remaining wood thickness and condition.

Choose the construction

Engineered hardwood

A real-wood surface over a layered core. Its construction offers greater dimensional stability, with product-specific options for concrete and other subfloors. Check wear-layer thickness and refinishing limitations.

Choose the finish

Prefinished hardwood

The protective finish is applied at the factory. This avoids on-site sanding and coating of new boards, though cutting and preparation still create dust. Adhesive and installation requirements determine when you can use the room.

Choose the finish

Unfinished & site-finished hardwood

Installed first, then sanded and finished in your home. Choose a natural look or a custom stain, with samples reviewed before finishing. Allow time for the finishing process and the specified cure schedule.

Swipe, scroll or use the arrows to explore. Reclaimed wood and distressed finishes are different: one reuses older material, while the other creates a textured appearance. For imported species such as Brazilian cherry, mahogany or teak, review sourcing, product instructions and care needs.

The method follows the material

Nail down, glue down or floating?

The right method depends on the flooring product, subfloor and room. We explain the proposed system so you can compare installation quotes on the same basis.

Nail or staple down

Fasteners secure compatible flooring to a suitable wood subfloor. The product determines the fastener type, spacing and whether adhesive assistance is required.

Glue down

An approved adhesive bonds the flooring to the prepared substrate. Product compatibility, moisture requirements and adhesive application are part of the installation plan.

Floating engineered wood

Approved boards connect to one another above a suitable underlayment. Perimeter clearances, transitions and restrictions around fixed cabinetry must follow the product instructions.

Good preparation protects the result

Moisture and acclimation come before installation.

Wood responds to its surroundings. Installation readiness depends on the selected product, the subfloor and the indoor conditions where the floor will be used.

We plan acclimation around the manufacturer’s instructions and moisture checks. A fixed three-day wait is not a substitute for evaluating readiness. Keep the home’s normal heating and cooling conditions established before material delivery.

Subfloor preparation also matters: an underlayment does not replace needed repairs or flattening. Discuss squeaks, uneven areas, crawlspace concerns and slab moisture during the estimate.

How your hardwood installation works

From the first sample to the final walk-through, know what happens next and which details are included.

  1. Meet, measure & compare

We bring samples to your home, measure the rooms and discuss your preferred look, budget and timing. Share details about stairs, pets and existing floors.

  2. Confirm material & scope

Choose solid or engineered wood, the finish and installation method. Review ordering quantities, matching trim, removal, preparation and the written estimate.

  3. Prepare the space

The agreed work may include removing old flooring, correcting subfloor issues and planning transitions. New subflooring is included only where the assessment and estimate call for it.

  4. Check readiness to install

Review jobsite conditions, moisture requirements and product-specific acclimation. Delivery and installation are coordinated with the home’s normal indoor conditions.

  5. Install & finish the details

We lay out and fit the flooring, then complete specified transitions and trim. Site-finished wood also receives the agreed sanding, color and finish process.

  6. Clean up & walk through

Review the finished work, cleanup and care instructions. Confirm when furniture and rugs can return, and keep product information and spare boards for future needs.

Understand the full project price

Hardwood floor installation cost

Our published starting labor rate for solid and engineered hardwood is $3.25 per square foot, with a 500-square-foot minimum. Materials and project-specific extras are quoted separately.

For example, 500 square feet at that starting rate equals $1,625 in installation labor. This is a calculation of base labor, not a complete installed-floor price.

The price list also includes unfinished hardwood labor from $2.75 per square foot. Confirm sanding, staining and finishing as separate scope items when comparing a site-finished project.

Details that make the floor feel complete

Coordinate rooms, stairs and existing hardwood.

Review board direction, visible transitions, door clearances and the finished height beside other surfaces. Stairs need their own treads, nosing and installation details.

If you are extending an existing wood floor, compare species, width, thickness, grade and finish. New wood can look different from aged boards; a larger finishing area may help blend suitable site-finished floors.

Consider the floor you already have

Could refinishing be the better choice?

If existing hardwood is structurally sound and has enough usable wood, restoring it may be worth comparing with replacement. Condition and the change you want determine the options.

A new floor can improve the appearance of a home, but a particular resale return cannot be guaranteed.

Built for everyday living

Enjoy the character. Know how to care for it.

Regular dry cleaning, prompt spill cleanup and a cleaner approved for the finish help protect hardwood. Use suitable furniture pads and avoid wet or steam mopping. No wood floor is scratch-proof, so discuss pets, children and daily wear when choosing the surface.

We review care and return-to-use instructions at completion. Keep the product details and written workmanship warranty together for future reference.

Before you choose your new floor

Hardwood installation questions, answered

How much does hardwood floor installation cost?

Wills Flooring lists solid and engineered hardwood installation labor from $3.25 per square foot, with a 500-square-foot minimum on the published offer. Flooring materials and project-specific preparation or extras are separate. We measure your project and provide an itemized estimate with the applicable rate and inclusions.

Is solid or engineered hardwood better for my home?

Both have a real-wood surface. Solid hardwood offers one-piece construction, while engineered hardwood has a layered core that generally moves less with environmental changes. The best choice depends on the room, subfloor, width, moisture conditions and your long-term refinishing goals.

Can hardwood flooring be installed over concrete?

Some engineered products are approved for concrete using a specified glue-down or floating system. The slab needs suitable preparation and moisture testing, with any required moisture-control system. Do not assume that a product approved for a wood subfloor is also approved directly over concrete.

How long does hardwood need to acclimate?

There is no universal three-day rule. Follow the instructions for the specific flooring and evaluate indoor conditions, subfloor moisture and the wood itself. A calendar alone does not establish that a floor is ready to install.

Does wide-plank hardwood need glue and nails?

It depends on the product. Some wide-plank floors require or allow adhesive assistance with mechanical fastening; others use a different approved method. Ask the installer to identify the product instructions and explain the proposed adhesive, fastening and moisture-control system in the quote.

Can new hardwood match my existing floors?

We compare species, board width, thickness, grade, color and sheen. Age and sunlight can affect the existing floor, so an exact match is not guaranteed. For suitable site-finished wood, tying in new boards and refinishing a larger connected area may create a more consistent appearance.

Do I have to buy the flooring from Wills Flooring?

You can choose your own materials. We also help you compare samples and supplier options. Before purchasing, confirm the product, quantities, installation requirements and matching transitions with us so the flooring suits the project.

Is engineered hardwood waterproof?

Do not assume that it is. Engineered construction improves dimensional stability but does not by itself make a floor waterproof. Check the specific product’s exposure limits and warranty, and address spills and moisture promptly.

Can you install wood flooring on stairs?

Yes, stair flooring is assessed and quoted separately. Treads, risers, nosing and landings need suitable components and attachment details. We can coordinate the appearance with adjoining hardwood; railing or structural changes require a separately defined scope.

How long does installation take, and can I stay home?

Timing depends on floor area, demolition, preparation, material readiness, installation method and finishing. Discuss room access, furniture, pets and daily routes before work begins. Prefinished and site-finished floors have different return-to-use requirements, so ask for a schedule for your actual project.

What warranty comes with installation?

Wills Flooring advertises a one-year workmanship warranty. Ask for its written coverage, exclusions and claim process with your estimate. Product warranties come from the manufacturer and have their own installation, indoor-climate and maintenance requirements.

Should I replace my hardwood or refinish it?

If the existing wood is sound and has enough usable thickness, refinishing may be worth comparing with replacement. Replacement may suit a change of material, extensive damage or a floor that cannot be restored. We can review the condition before you choose.
