For most Edmonds bedrooms and living rooms, the right pad is a 7/16 in thick, 8 lb density rebond cushion. Density is what makes carpet last; thickness only makes it feel soft, and past 1/2 in it starts to hurt the carpet. Berber and looped carpets need a firmer, thinner pad, stairs need the firmest you can get, and carpet over a slab near the water should sit on a pad with a moisture barrier. Labor is $0.99 per sq ft whichever pad you pick, so upgrading it only moves the material line.
Carpet padding is the part of the job nobody sees and almost everyone under-buys. When we pull up a 15-year-old carpet in a Seaview or Westgate rambler, the carpet is often still intact; it is the pad that has turned to crumbs, and the carpet has been wearing against bare plywood for years. A common Reddit thread asks whether upgrading the pad is worth it or an upsell. It is worth it.
What the pad actually does
It absorbs the impact, not the carpet
Every footstep compresses the carpet fibers. With a good pad underneath, the pad takes most of that compression and springs back, so the fibers bend less and recover faster. Over a thin or worn pad, fibers crush against the subfloor and mat down in traffic lanes.
It quiets the room and the floor below
Pad is why carpeted upstairs bedrooms in a two-story Perrinville house are quieter than the hardwood downstairs. Denser pad blocks more footfall noise and helps condo owners in the Bowl meet building sound rules. A 5 lb pad does far less than an 8 lb one at the same thickness.
It insulates over cold floors
Over a slab, or over a crawlspace in a 1960s rambler, pad adds a real thermal break. Rebond and fiber pads trap air; rubber pads less so. If a room has always felt cold underfoot, the pad changes that more than the carpet fiber will.
It can stop spills from reaching the subfloor
Standard rebond is a sponge, so pet accidents soak into the plywood and come back as odor for years. A pad with a moisture barrier film on top keeps liquid where it can be extracted. Our damp marine air makes that more useful, not less, because wet subfloors dry slowly.
Density vs thickness: the two numbers on the label
| Spec | What it means | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Density (lb per cubic ft) | How much material is packed in. Higher is firmer and lasts longer under traffic. | 6 lb minimum, 8 lb for living areas, halls and stairs, 10 lb for heavy traffic |
| Thickness | How much cushion you feel. Thicker feels softer but lets the carpet flex and stretch. | 7/16 in for cut pile; 3/8 in for berber and loop; never over 1/2 in with stretch-in carpet |
| Moisture barrier | A film bonded to the top surface that stops liquids soaking in. | Pets, kids, slab floors, any room with a spill you could not get out |
| Antimicrobial treatment | Additive that slows mildew and odor in the pad itself. | Useful in damp Edmonds crawlspace homes; not a substitute for fixing moisture |
Most carpet warranties list a minimum density and a maximum thickness. Ask for the pad spec in writing so the warranty stays valid.

Carpet Installation Calculator
Real Wills Flooring labor pricing. Carpet and pad are quoted separately once you pick the style you like.
Labor is published and flat: $0.99 per sq ft stretched in over pad, $1.29 glue-down on a slab, $30 per step, $0.45 per sq ft to tear the old carpet and pad out. A 950 sq ft Westgate main floor with 14 stairs is 950 x ($0.99 + $0.45) + 14 x $30 = $1,788 in labor. Carpet and pad are quoted on top of that, and the pad upgrade is the cheapest line on the sheet.
The pad types you will be offered
- Rebond (bonded urethane). The multicolored foam made from recycled cushion scraps, and the standard for good reason: durable, affordable, made in every density. 8 lb at 7/16 in is our default.
- Frothed and memory foam. Denser, more uniform urethane. Frothed foam is very durable and thin; memory foam feels luxurious but is too soft under berber and slows carpet recovery. Fine in bedrooms, skip it on stairs.
- Fiber pad (synthetic felt). Firm and flat, often 3/8 in. The right pad under berber, commercial loop and many wool carpets. It does not feel plush, which is the point.
- Rubber (waffle or flat slab). Premium and long-lived. Flat rubber is excellent under wool and on stairs. Waffle rubber feels soft because of the air pockets and breaks down faster. Both are heavy to handle.
- Moisture-barrier rebond. Regular rebond with a sealed film face. Our most common upgrade for homes with dogs and for slab rooms near the waterfront.
Match the pad to the carpet, not the other way around
Cut pile: plush, frieze, saxony
Use a cushioned pad
- 7/16 in rebond at 8 lb for family rooms and bedrooms
- Memory foam is fine in low-traffic bedrooms
- Moisture barrier if there are pets or young children
- Keep it under 1/2 in so seams and stretch hold
Loop pile: berber, level loop, many wools
Use a firm, thin pad
- 3/8 in at 8 lb, or a fiber or flat rubber pad
- Thick soft pads let loops stretch, causing ripples and pulled seams
- Most berber warranties specify the thinner pad
- Firm pad helps loops resist snagging at seams
Where Edmonds homes go wrong with pad
- Reusing the old padIt looks fine, so the installer leaves it. Old pad has already lost its resilience where people walk, so new carpet inherits the old traffic lanes within a year. New carpet gets new pad, and the old pad goes out on the $0.45 per sq ft tear-out line.
- Soft pad on the stairsA thick, cushy pad on a Seaview split-level staircase feels great for a month. Then the carpet loosens at the nosing and wrinkles. Stairs get a firm 8 lb pad or flat rubber.
- Standard pad over a damp slabMany 1950s to 1970s ramblers here have a slab family room that runs damp in winter. Ordinary rebond wicks that moisture up and smells within a season. Test the slab, then use a barrier pad or a glue-down install at $1.29 per sq ft.
- Ignoring the condo sound ruleBuildings in the Bowl and near the ferry often require a minimum sound rating for floor coverings. A dense pad is the cheapest way to meet it. Ask the HOA for the number first.
Do not judge pad by squeezing it: The softest sample in the store is usually the lowest density and the first to fail. Turn it over, read the density in pounds, and pick 8 lb. We bring pad samples with the carpet samples to every carpet estimate so you can compare labels side by side.
