The best hardwood for dogs is a hard, tight-grained species like hickory or white oak, in a light to medium color with a matte, site-applied finish that can be recoated. The finish and the color hide more than the hardness rating prevents. Dog nails rarely dent a floor; they scratch the finish. So the species keeps the wood itself from denting under a running Lab, and the finish, sheen and color decide whether you see the daily wear. Wills Flooring installs engineered or solid hardwood for $3.25 per sq ft in labor, material quoted separately.
Snohomish is dog country. Acreage off Fobes Hill, trails around Blackmans Lake, farm dogs in Clearview that come in wet from October to May. So the question we hear at the door is rarely "can we have hardwood with dogs" and more often "which hardwood will still look good in five years with two of them." A common Reddit thread asks the same thing and gets forty answers about Janka numbers. Hardness is one third of the answer. Here are all three.
Hardness: what the Janka number tells you and what it misses
| Species | Janka rating | With dogs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hickory | 1,820 | Excellent | Hardest domestic option. Strong grain and color variation hide scratches and hair. |
| Hard maple | 1,450 | Good, with a catch | Very hard, but the clear, pale grain shows every scratch and it takes stain unevenly. |
| White oak | 1,360 | Excellent | Tight grain, takes matte finishes beautifully, and it is the easiest floor to refinish later. |
| Ash | 1,320 | Very good | Similar to white oak with bolder grain. Less common in stock. |
| Red oak | 1,290 | Good | The oak in most 1990s Snohomish homes. Pink undertone, open grain that hides light wear. |
| Walnut | 1,010 | Fair | Gorgeous and soft. Big dogs will dent it; choose it for a bedroom, not the mudroom. |
| Douglas fir | 660 | Poor for dogs | Original floors in Snohomish farmhouses. Refinishable and beautiful, but nails dent it. |
Janka measures how hard it is to press a steel ball into the wood, which is dent resistance. Scratches from nails happen in the finish on top, which is why a hard species with a poor finish still looks terrible in a year.
Finish: where the scratches actually live
Our recommendation
Site-finished, three coats water-based
Unfinished planks are installed, sanded flat and coated with three coats of Bona water-based finish. The seams are sealed as one surface, so nothing collects in bevels, and when the finish shows wear in the traffic lanes you recoat it at $1.99 per sq ft instead of living with it.
Trade-offs
Prefinished with aluminum oxide
Factory finishes are extremely hard and survive years of nails. The downside is how they fail: scratches show as white lines, the micro-bevel at every edge collects dog hair and mud, and a recoat needs special abrasion. Fine for most homes, less forgiving for heavy dogs.
Sheen
Matte or satin, never gloss
A scratch is visible because it scatters light differently than the finish around it. Gloss makes that contrast obvious; matte nearly erases it. Every dog household we work with in Snohomish gets steered to a matte or low-satin sheen, and none have asked to go back.
Texture
Wire-brushed or character grade
A wire-brushed surface already has fine texture, so a new nail mark disappears into it. Character-grade boards with knots and mineral streaks do the same job visually. Clear-grade, smooth, pale maple is the opposite: it is a whiteboard for every mark.
Color and grain: hiding what you cannot prevent
- Light to medium tones. A scratch through a dark stain exposes pale raw wood and reads as a white line. On a natural white oak or a light hickory, the scratch is the same color as the floor.
- Match the dog's hair. A black Lab sheds on a light floor and a golden sheds on a dark one. Medium tones with grain variation split the difference and hide both between vacuums.
- Busy grain beats calm grain. Hickory's contrast, oak's cathedral grain and ash's bold figure all distract the eye from wear. Maple's quiet grain does not.
- Skip the gray and espresso stains. Both were popular in the 2010s and both show dog wear worse than anything else we refinish. Natural or lightly toned floors are also what buyers want now.

Hardwood Installation Calculator
Installation pricing from our published rate card. Material is quoted separately based on the floor you choose.
For a 1,200 sq ft farmhouse main floor in prefinished hickory, installation labor is 1,200 × $3.25 = $3,900. For the site-finished route we recommend for dog homes, it is 1,200 × $2.75 = $3,300 to install unfinished white oak plus 1,200 × $3.99 = $4,788 to sand and apply three coats, so $8,088 in labor and finish before material. The site-finished floor costs more up front and is the one you can recoat for $1.99 per sq ft every five to eight years instead of replacing.
Solid or engineered for a dog household
Solid hardwood
Choose solid when
- Plywood subfloor over a dry crawlspace, which is most Snohomish houses
- You want to sand and refinish it for the next 50 years
- 3/4 in thickness for the deepest possible future sanding
- Matching existing solid oak or fir in an older farmhouse
Engineered hardwood
Choose engineered when
- Wide planks over 5 in, which move too much in solid form
- A damp crawlspace or a slab, where stability matters more
- Wear layer of 3 mm or more so it can still be sanded at least once
- Radiant heat, which is common in newer Clearview builds
The Snohomish factor: Mud is a bigger threat than nails. Wet grit carried in from acreage acts like sandpaper on any finish. A washable rug inside every door, a towel station in the mudroom and a tray under the water bowl will do more for the floor than upgrading from oak to hickory.
When hardwood is the wrong floor for your dogs
- An incontinent senior or a puppy in training. Urine that sits overnight blackens oak and the stain goes deep. Put vinyl plank in the rooms where accidents happen and hardwood everywhere else.
- Three or more big dogs coming in from mud daily. No finish keeps up. A mudroom in tile or vinyl plank that transitions to hardwood at the hall is the honest layout.
- You will not recoat. Hardwood with dogs is a maintenance relationship: trim nails, rugs at doors, recoat before the wear reaches wood. If that is not you, see our best vinyl plank for dogs post instead.
- Original fir you love. Keep it, refinish it, and accept that nails will mark it. Fir farmhouse floors in Snohomish wear their history well; just do not expect them to stay perfect.
