Carpet vs Vinyl Plank for Bedrooms: Which Is Right for Seattle Homes?

Carpet vs vinyl plank for Seattle bedrooms: carpet is warmer, quieter and $0.99 per sq ft to install, LVP $2.50 and better for pets. Wills Flooring compares.
Short answer

For most Seattle bedrooms, carpet is still the better choice: it is warmer on a 40-degree January morning, quieter above a neighbor or a living room, and cheap to replace one room at a time. Vinyl plank wins when allergies, pets or a fast resale drive the decision. There is no wrong answer here, only a wrong match for how you live. Wills Flooring installs both and publishes both labor rates: carpet is $0.99 per sq ft stretched in over pad, vinyl plank $2.50, each with a 500 sq ft minimum. The carpet, pad or plank itself is quoted at the free estimate.

A common Reddit thread asks whether anyone regrets putting LVP in their bedrooms, and the answers split almost exactly down the middle. That is because the question has two very different Seattle homes behind it: a Capitol Hill condo with quiet hours and a downstairs neighbor, and a Ballard bungalow with a dog, a toddler and hay fever. The right floor for one is the wrong floor for the other. Let's separate them.

Head to head in a bedroom

What matters in a bedroomCarpetVinyl plank (LVP)
Bare feet at 6 a.m. in winterWarm and soft, especially over a good pad.Cool. Warmer than tile, colder than carpet. Rugs help.
Noise to the room belowBest. Carpet and pad absorb footfall and dropped items.Hard surface. Needs an acoustic underlayment to pass condo sound rules.
Allergies and dustTraps dust and dander; needs a HEPA vacuum weekly.Wipes clean. The usual recommendation for allergy sufferers.
PetsAccidents soak into pad. Claws snag loop styles.Waterproof and easy to clean. Claws can scratch thin wear layers.
KidsSoft landing for toddlers. Spills stain lighter fibers.Easy cleanup; harder falls. Play rugs solve both.
Lifespan8 to 15 years in a bedroom.15 to 25 years.
Replacing one room laterEasy and inexpensive.Matching a discontinued plank can be hard.
Look and resaleNeutral. Seattle buyers accept bedroom carpet but rarely get excited.Continuous hard floors read as "updated" in listings.

Where carpet wins in Seattle

Condos and upstairs bedrooms

Most Seattle condo associations require a minimum sound rating for hard floors, and many simply prohibit them in bedrooms above another unit. Carpet passes without paperwork. In a Queen Anne or Capitol Hill building with quiet hours, that alone can decide it.

Cold old houses

A 1920s Wallingford or Beacon Hill bungalow with a crawlspace and original single-pane windows loses heat through the floor. Carpet over an 8 lb pad is real insulation you feel every morning, not just a softer surface.

Budget by the room

Carpet lets you do the kids' rooms now and the primary later without visible mismatches, because bedroom carpet does not need to match the hallway. LVP through the upstairs is usually an all-at-once project.

Quiet inside the room

Hard floors bounce sound. A bedroom with LVP and a bare wall needs a rug and curtains before it feels restful. Carpet does that on day one, which matters in a small West Seattle bedroom.

Where vinyl plank wins

Dogs, cats and accidents

A pet accident on carpet reaches the pad in seconds and the subfloor in minutes. On LVP it is a paper towel. For households with a senior pet or a puppy, this outweighs almost everything else.

Allergies and asthma

Carpet holds dust, dander and pollen that a hard floor does not. If someone in the bedroom wakes up congested, we usually recommend LVP with a washable rug, not carpet.

Selling in the next few years

Seattle listings that say "hard-surface flooring throughout" show and photograph better. It is a modest edge, but in Ballard and Magnolia, where buyers expect updated finishes, it is real.

Continuity with the hallway

If the hall and living areas are already LVP or hardwood, running the same plank into the bedrooms makes a small house feel larger. Carpet at every bedroom door chops the plan up.

The Seattle wrinkles that change the answer

  • Condo rules first. Ask the HOA for its hard-surface flooring policy before you fall for a plank. Many require an IIC sound rating in the 50s, an approved underlayment and neighbor notification. Some prohibit hard floors in bedrooms entirely.
  • Old house floors are not flat. Craftsman and Tudor bedrooms in Wallingford and Green Lake often slope an inch across the room. Carpet hides that. LVP telegraphs it and may need leveling first.
  • Check what is under the carpet. A surprising number of 1900s to 1950s Seattle bedrooms have original fir or oak. Refinishing it may beat both options; see our refinish-or-replace checklist.
  • Radiant heat. Carpet and pad insulate against the heat you are paying for. LVP over radiant works if the product is rated for it.
  • Rentals. Landlords in Seattle's tenant-turnover market almost always choose LVP in bedrooms. Carpet gets replaced between tenants; plank does not.

When the answer is both

Carpet in the bedrooms

The classic split works when

  • Hallway and living areas are hard surface and bedrooms are private retreats
  • Kids' rooms need soft landings and sound control
  • The condo requires it above another unit
  • You want warmth without rugs on every square foot

LVP in the bedrooms

Go all hard surface when

  • Pets sleep in the bedrooms
  • Someone has allergies
  • You are listing within three years
  • The rest of the floor is already plank and you want it continuous

Labor is not the whole comparison: Three Seattle bedrooms at 520 sq ft run 520 x $0.99 = $515 in carpet labor against 520 x $2.50 = $1,300 for plank. Carpet starts cheaper, then the material lands on top, and a good carpet over an 8 lb pad closes most of that gap against a mid-grade plank. Choose on how you live, not on which one looks like the budget option.

What to ask before you decide

  • Ask for both options on the same written quote. Carpet with the pad specified in density, and plank with the wear layer in mils. We bring samples of each to your Seattle home and price them side by side.
  • Ask about sound. For any bedroom above another room, ask what underlayment is under the plank or what pad is under the carpet.
  • Ask how the rooms will be measured. Carpet is cut from a 12 ft roll, so a 13 ft bedroom wastes material even though labor is a flat $0.99 per sq ft. Both floors carry a 500 sq ft minimum.
  • Ask about the warranty. Every Wills Flooring install, carpet or plank, carries a 1-year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's. Our carpet installation page lists what is included.

Bedroom flooring questions from Seattle homeowners

Condo rules, cold floors, dogs and resale, answered straight.

Is carpet or vinyl plank better for bedrooms?
Carpet is warmer, quieter and softer, which suits most bedrooms, especially in condos and upstairs rooms. Vinyl plank is better for pets, allergies and resale, and it lasts longer. In Seattle, the decision usually comes down to whether there is a neighbor below you and whether an animal sleeps in the room.
Does vinyl plank in bedrooms hurt resale value in Seattle?
No. Continuous hard-surface flooring generally helps a Seattle listing show better, and buyers rarely object to plank in bedrooms. Bedroom carpet is accepted but neutral. Cheap, thin plank with visible seams and dents can hurt, so if you choose LVP for resale, buy a 20 mil wear layer.
Can I install vinyl plank in a Seattle condo bedroom?
Often, but check first. Most associations require a minimum sound rating, an approved acoustic underlayment and sometimes neighbor notification for hard floors over another unit. A few prohibit them in bedrooms. We help with the paperwork, but the HOA has the final word.
Is carpet bad for allergies in a bedroom?
Carpet holds dust, dander and pollen that hard floors do not, and the bedroom is where you spend eight hours breathing near the floor. Weekly HEPA vacuuming helps a lot. If someone wakes congested, we recommend vinyl plank with a washable rug rather than carpet.
What is cheaper for a bedroom, carpet or LVP?
Labor is not close: carpet is $0.99 per sq ft stretched in, vinyl plank is $2.50, both with a 500 sq ft minimum. Material is where it evens out, since a quality carpet and an 8 lb pad can cost as much per foot as a mid-grade plank. For one bedroom the two often land within a few hundred dollars of each other.
How long does carpet last in a bedroom compared to vinyl plank?
Bedroom carpet lasts 8 to 15 years because traffic is light; the pad often gives out before the fiber. Quality vinyl plank lasts 15 to 25 years. Carpet is easier to replace one room at a time, while matching a discontinued plank years later can be difficult.
